"The Last Train"
Setting:
A remote railway station in rural India, shrouded in mist. It’s the middle of the night, and the only sounds are the distant hoot of an owl and the rustle of the wind.
Plot:
Opening Scene:
A young man, Ravi, misses his train and is stranded at the deserted Khandpur Station. The stationmaster, an elderly man with a somber expression, warns him, “The last train isn’t for people like us. Don’t board it.” Ravi brushes it off as superstition.
As the clock strikes midnight, the sound of a train approaching echoes through the silence. A gleaming black train pulls into the station. Its carriages are old but immaculate, and the passengers inside seem oddly still, their faces obscured by shadows.
Inciting Incident:
Curious, Ravi boards the train, hoping to reach the next town. He notices the eerie silence inside. The passengers, though seated, don’t move or speak. The only sound is the rhythmic clatter of the train wheels.
As the train moves, Ravi feels a chill. He notices a woman in a red saree sitting across from him, her face hidden under a veil. She doesn’t respond when he tries to talk to her.
The Twist:
The train stops at strange, desolate stations where shadowy figures board. Ravi’s unease grows as he notices time behaving strangely—his watch runs backward, and the view outside the window shows not fields but burning pyres and crying spirits.
Finally, the woman in red lifts her veil, revealing a hollow, eyeless face. She whispers, “You shouldn’t have come here.”
Climax:
Terrified, Ravi tries to pull the emergency chain, but it snaps. The passengers now turn to him, their faces grotesquely disfigured, murmuring his name. The train speeds up, heading into an endless tunnel of darkness.
Ending Scene:
The next morning, the stationmaster finds Ravi’s bag on the platform. No train was scheduled that night. A newspaper headline reads:
“Midnight Train Legend Claims Another Victim.”
In the distance, the faint whistle of a train can still be heard, but the tracks are empty.
Visual Style:
The misty station, dim lantern light, and haunting train interiors can create a spine-chilling atmosphere. Use traditional Indian elements like the red saree and mythological undertones to ground the story in Indian culture.
