The Haunted Banyan Tree
Long ago, in a small village in India, there stood a massive banyan tree at the edge of the settlement. Villagers avoided it after sunset, for they believed it was cursed. Stories whispered that a woman, betrayed and abandoned, had taken her life there many years ago. Her spirit was said to linger, seeking revenge.
One night, a wandering merchant decided to rest under the tree, dismissing the villagers' warnings as mere superstition. The moonlight filtered through the gnarled branches, casting eerie shadows. As he settled, a soft, melodic voice began to hum a haunting tune. Startled, the merchant turned to see a beautiful woman in a flowing white saree standing a few feet away.
She smiled and asked, “Why are you here, stranger? Don’t you fear the tree?”
He shook his head. “Ghosts don’t scare me,” he replied boldly.
The woman’s smile turned into a menacing grin. Her face twisted grotesquely, her eyes glowing red. “Then let me show you why you should be afraid,” she hissed.
The merchant screamed as cold, invisible hands grabbed him, dragging him toward the tree. The villagers found him the next morning, unconscious and mumbling about a woman with fiery eyes. From that day forward, no one dared to approach the banyan tree, and the legend of the vengeful spirit only grew stronger.
Even today, the tree stands, its roots twisted like gnarled fingers, a silent reminder of a story no one dares to test.
